First off when you design any character whether they are the hero, mentor, villain or shadow they have to have a level of likability. No gamer wants to play a character that they dis like. so……… what makes a good character…

  • Likability as any archetype

First off when you design any character whether they are the hero, mentor, villain or shadow they have to have a level of likability.

  • Relate-able

Sometimes a good character is a relate-able one. Similar life experiences or even playing a personality that your wish you could be like in reality.

  • A background

Giving your character a background makes them more believable, gives the player a better understanding of why they look and react in situations the way they do.

  • Believability as a living breathing emotional entity

If your design is behaving in a way that LOOKS out of character you can shatter the believability of who they are supposed to be. For example if Lara croft was climbing mountains in dress and tiara you couldn’t take her seriously as a tomb raider.

  • Original in design

Making your character original is very important.

  • character silhouette  ( you should be able to identify your character by their silhouette alone )
  • visually compelling
  • details ( how they speak, mannerisms, dress etc make a believable character )
  • longevity ( memorable characters have a longer shelf life )
  • personality
  • A Name
